Artist Statement

Since the beginning of colonialism, Europeans have invented narratives to claim their superiority and justify their actions in Africa. The rhetoric of “The White Man’s Burden” and “The Civilizing Mission” framed the invasion of the continent and the oppression of native populations as necessary to the spread civilization and enlightenment. This racist rhetoric still guides Western understanding of African history and politics today. Our collective knowledge is reduced to starving children, safaris, and ruthless dictators.

Yet there is so much in African history to inspire us; the Afro-positivism movement redirects our attention towards such aspects. In this spirit, I have portrayed a small selection of African leaders who should be as well-known around the globe as Malcolm X, Ho Chi Minh and William Wallace.
